Cam Miller

December 1st-29th the Blanche Ames Gallery will be featuring ..... LIFE THROUGH MY LENS: Collected Works by Cam Miller. This show is a collection of images that capture just how rich her life has become through the medium of photography.

Cam Miller is a retired educator turned professional fine art photographer who lives in New Market, Maryland. After living and teaching on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, she moved four years ago to Central Maryland, where she is fully engaged in the arts community. She is a member of several museums, arts councils, and photography clubs, as well as one of the co-chairs for Easels in Frederick. Cam has won numerous awards for her photographs, which include light paintings, landscapes, birds, butterflies, and architecture. She teaches photography classes at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center in Frederick and at Frederick Community College. Recently, Cam completed an ambitious yearlong personal project of doing a daily photo walk, after which she wrote about where she had walked and posted the photos on her blog.

Her travels in the past year have taken her to San Antonio, Death Valley, the Smoky Mountains, and to the Canaan Valley in West Virginia. A number of images in the show are from those journeys. In addition, Cam used her camera every single day from September 3. 2012, to September 2, 2013, on a personal project of completing a daily photo walk, most of it in Maryland. Favorites from her walks are collected into the "My Maryland" set of images included in the show. Most recently, Cam has ventured into light painting. This technique of using a flashlight to light individual sections of a group of objects, and then compositing them onto a base image, results in a photograph that has a very painterly quality. As a result of her efforts, Cam has garnered a number of awards for her photographs, namely in the Art in Nature Photo Festival (2011 - 2013), the Frederick Camera Clique Summer Show (2013), the "Light and Shadow" show (2013) and the Vincent Versace Award for Digital Photographic Excellence (2011). Cam extends her love of photography to others by teaching at Frederick Community College and at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center, as well as doing private tutoring. She writes a blog for the Frederick News-Post entitled "Life Through My Lens."

Artist’s Statement: Always having a camera handy is a lesson that I learned early on in my quest for making photographic art. Opportunities present themselves when you least expect them: rays will stream down from the clouds; a great blue heron will land on the pilings in front of you; acres of blooming sunflowers are just around the bend on the back road I’m traveling. Having a camera ready to capture the unexpected moments is the first step in making a great photograph. I seek out strong compositions, different perspectives, and unusual details in the subjects I am shooting. I love reflections, shadows, texture, color, and tones. Old barns, rustic farm scenes, and vintage autos are favorite subjects. There is still so much for me to learn about photography, and I love exploring it all. Recently, I have tried my hand at macro photography and light painting. Photography is an art that provides the photographer with new learning opportunities every day. For a lifelong learner like me, it is the perfect medium to keep me challenged and growing in my art.
