On the first day of spring (March 20, 2008), UUCF was officially welcomed by the UU Ministry for the Earth as a candidate in the Green Sanctuary Program! It is propitious that our 2-year candidacy period begins with Earth Month, April! Attached are copies of the welcome letter from Katherine Jesche, and a copy of the detailed critique of our Action Plan. We still have a lot of work to do to refine and fulfill our Action Plan, which was adopted unanimously by UUCF members at the June 2007 Annual Congregational Meeting. We have already accomplished a lot, which we need to outline in more detail. We also need to refine and perhaps expand on our projects specifically in the Environmental Justice category - this is an area that is difficult for many congregations to address, as we have learned from discussions on the Green Sanctuary national list-serve. ❀ BLUEBIRDS ADOPTED BY YRUUF!! Hats off to the youth of UUCF who have adopted the bluebird houses on the UUCF grounds! ❀ WILDFLOWER MEADOW Please stay off the newly seeded grass! We have learned that despite the temptation, pulling weeds in a first year prairie seeding is strongly discouraged! Wildflower seedlings remain very small the first year, and are easily pulled up along with the weeds! Beware that pulling weeds also creates soil disturbance, which exposes new weed seeds and encourages their germination.
