Spring Programs:

Tai Chi
Denise McIntyre-Workman
Session A:
Tuesdays, 7:00-8:00 PM, 8 sessions (May 6, 13, 20, 27, June 3, 17, 24, July 1; Note: No class June 10)
Session B: Tuesdays, 7:00-8:00 PM, 9 sessions (July 8, 15, 22, August 5, 12, 19, 26, September 2, 9); Note: No class July 29)

Course Description: Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art that is primarily practiced for its health benefits, including dealing with tension and stress. It emphasizes complete relaxation and is essentially a form of “meditation in motion.” These classes are suitable for both beginning and experienced students.

Denise McIntyre-Workman has been practicing Tai Chi since 2001, began teaching in 2003, and in 2005 received an instructor certification from the United States Martial Artist Association. One of the things that drew her to Tai Chi is its history of passing on the skills learned from a Sifu (teacher) to the beginner. Denise encourages more advanced students to help the beginners in her classes and to develop the skill and confidence to lead a class on their own. She says the most gratifying part of teaching Tai Chi is the ability to share it with others.

Suggested Donation to UUCF: $40 for Session A/$45 Session B
Minimum: 4; Maximum: 8

For More Information: Contact the class leader/facilitator by sending an email to enrichment@frederickuu.org (be sure to indicate “Tai Chi” in the subject line of your email).

A Course in Miracles Workshop

The workshop will be a balance of lecture, group participation, and sharing. The Course is taught through each participant’s personal life experience.

Detailed handouts will be provided. Please bring a brown bag lunch. Following the workshop, there will be a weekly study group offered on Monday nights at UUCF (see below).

Mike Saedlo has been a student of A Course in Miracles since 1979. He has been teaching and developing ACIM workshops at the Institute for the Advance of Service in Alexandria, VA, for the past 25 years. Photo Safari
Patricia Cronin and Andy Celmer
Sunday, July 13, 11:45-4:30 PM (approximate) and Sunday, July 20, 11:45-1:15 PM

Course Description: Enthusiastic amateur photographers Andy Celmer and Patricia Cronin will lead a group of snap-happy UUCFers (adults and families) to several photogenic spots nearby. On Sunday, July 13, we’ll start at the church with a few basic photography tips while we eat our brown bag lunch (BYO), then it’s off to take some photos until about 4:30 PM. Each of us will bring some of our photos to share at the session on the following Sunday, July 20, to discuss why we like it or what makes it “good” or “not so good.”

Adults and kids are welcome to participate, but each should have a separate camera to avoid squabbling over who took that one really excellent picture. Use any camera…digital, film, or disposable. This offering is limited to four vehicles and as many photographers as can fit inside (no, it’s not OK to put little brother in the trunk or tie him to the roof-rack).

Patricia and Andy are enthusiastic amateur photographers who have taken thousands of photos in film and digital formats. We have made most of the mistakes possible in photography, and along the way have won a few awards and had a few photos published.

Suggested Donation to UUCF: NA

For More Information: Contact the class leader/facilitator by sending an email to enrichment@frederickuu.org (be sure to indicate “Photo Safari” in the subject line of your email).

Additional Programs

CHALICE COMMUNITY, Small Group Ministry at UUCF
These small groups (6-10 people) meet twice a month to talk about things that really matter, to explore deeper spiritual questions, and to connect with and really get to know the others in the group. CC groups are facilitated by members of the congregation who are experienced with the program and who meet regularly with the minister. The groups meet during the “church year” and are appropriate for brand new folk and seasoned members. Please see the brochure and registration form that are available on the RE station in the Narthex. After the current groups end in June, we will begin gathering registrations for the new season, to begin in October 2008. You may register at any time over the summer. Contact the CC Steering Committee by email (CC@frederickuu.org) or call Meg Menke (301-407-2224) or Nancy Hutchins (301-668-8213).

CIRCLE OF LIFE COOPERATIVE, A UU Preschool
The Circle of Life Cooperative’s mission is to provide a child-centered and family-involved preschool program based on the foundation of the UU Seven Principles and a belief that children benefit when the family is involved in the preschool environment. The Circle of Life offers a combined classroom for 3- and 4-year-olds, meeting five mornings each week during the school year. Contact Sue Singley (circleoflife@frederickuu.org) for more information.

Ongoing Groups (No Registration Necessary)

BOOK CLUB. The co-ed book club generally meets the fourth Friday evening of each month at a home on a rotating basis. Contact: Fanny Johnsson (301-694-5474).

BRIDGE GROUP. Bridge players meet on a Saturday near the end of the month for a potluck dinner and cards at one of our homes. Newcomers and players of varying abilities are welcome. Contact: Nancy Lohrey (301-606-4282) or Jane Ladner (301-865-5975).

CHRONOLOGICALLY GIFTED. Enjoy intellectual, culinary, and just-for-fun pursuits with others gifted with years and wisdom. This group usually meets midday on the second Saturday of the month between September and June. Contact: Janet Menzer (301-662-2729).

COVENANT OF UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST PAGANS (CUUPs). Currently, the CUUPS Open Circle is planning to conduct gatherings to coincide with the pagan wheel of the year. Please check the website and newsletter for updates. Contact: CUUPS@frederickcuups.org or Cosette Blackmer.

ENLIGHTENMENT STUDY GROUP. This group meets every Sunday morning for a short silent meditation and in-depth discussion of the current book. The group has discussed books by Eckhart Tolle, Pema Chodron, Steven Levine, and Lama Surya Das. Meeting times are 9:00-10:30 AM during the church year and 9:00-9:50 during the summer. Contact: Carole Benson (carolejbenson@comcast.net).

FREDERICK YOUNG ADULT GROUP. The Frederick Young Adult group—aimed at people 18-35 years old—is a fairly new group that is growing. It is a great way to meet people in the church community. Activities include social events, intellectual discussions, and community service. To find out more, express interest in participating, or just get on the email list to help plan events, email Scott Butki at sbutki@gmail.com.

FRIENDLY FORUM. Friendly Forum is an open discussion on an eclectic mix of topics related to UUCF and the wider world. This group meets between services on Sundays (10:00-10:55 AM), usually in Room 113. Check the Unison for announcements of scheduled topics. Friendly Forum does not meet in July and August. Contact: Dick and Janet Menzer (301-662-2729).

MOVIE DISCUSSION GROUP. This group meets once a month on a Sunday afternoon to view and discuss preselected movies. Check the Unison for announcements of dates, times, and movie titles. Contact: Scott Butki (sbutki@gmail.com).
