An introduction to Rev. Abigail Stockman

Throughout our work during the past year, we looked for the following qualities that you said were most important in a minister, a caring person with a good sense of humor, and an inspiring spiritual leader, well prepared professionally to lead our congregation.

Reverend Abigail Stockman is such a person. She impressed us during the telephone interviews in December of 2006. After meeting her, along with other selected candidates on three weekends in February of 2007, she was our first choice. We are thrilled that she accepted our invitation to be UUCF's candidate for settled ministry.

Rev. Abigail has a warm, caring and joyful personality. She is energetic, genuine, inquisitive and accepting. Her affiliation with Unitarian Universalism began in 1989 at the First Unitarian Church of New Bedford, Massachusetts. She was a lay leader in this congregation for more than ten years and active as a volunteer and staff member of her UU District before entering the seminary as a second career. After completing her studies at Andover Newton Theological Seminary in 2003, she received a Masters of Divinity degree with honors and was ordained in 2004.

She has been trained in interfaith health care ministry, worked in pastoral care with Hospice, has been a consulting minister with various UU churches in the northeast and, most recently, has for two years been Interim Minister at the UU Congregation of Northern Westchester (Mt. Kisco, NY).

Rev. Abigail has extensive church life experience in small group ministry, religious education, interfaith dialogue and pastoral care. Her involvement with social justice includes: serving as co-organizer of the community-wide interfaith environmental social action project "Earth Day, New Bedford"; organizing sponsorship of an interfaith photography exhibit on gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual families entitled "Love Makes a Family"; and, introducing her current congregation to participation in an interfaith project that provides shelter for homeless persons in the Mt. Kisco area.

Her skills in group facilitation are excellent, and during her time with us in February of 2007, we were highly impressed with her ability to be present and connect with each of us while maintaining her role as leader and guide.

In her free time, Rev. Abigail loves to ski, cook, share a meal with friends, go for long walks in the woods with her lab-coon hound mix dog, read, watch TV and videos, practice the harp or piano, and most recently, develop new skills in the martial art of Aikido.
